Master Bedroom Makeover

I love the color purple. So when we built a new house twelve years ago, that’s the color I chose for our master bedroom. {My inspiration at the time was Oprah, for she had a purple bedroom too!} It was supposed to be purple with a hint of brown, so I distinctly remember making the phone call to my husband at work, asking him if he felt pretty masculine because he indeed was going to have a “lavender purple” bedroom instead. Thankfully he didn’t care. Fast forward to 2013, when I was sick and tired of the color and needed a big change. Out with the purple bedding (although I still love designer Nate Berkus), purple walls and brass lamps, in with Sherwin Williams Silvermist (a beautiful blue-gray), accented with white, slate gray and just a touch of yellow.

My favorite piece in the wholeTriple Split Canvas room? The triple split canvas over our bed. This photo, taken by my fabulous friend Amy with Les Amis Photography, was the perfect one to use. I ordered the canvas through Costco. While my husband and I are the focus, I love that our kids are part of it, facing away from the camera as a reflection of our family. The background is the lovely Mississippi River and Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis.

My other favorite part to the room is the bedding, specifically the silk texture of the gray quilt. I’ll be honest, this was a splurge purchase and one I’ll have to have for a very long time. Normally, I would never have spent that much on a “quilt,” but I.Just.Had.To.Have.It. It’s the softest thing ever. Since it is completely reversible, I have it pulled up to the pillows and turned down at the edge, and then, for added texture, I added the second quilt folded at the end of the bed.

I’ll be honest, I don’t care for shams, so I opted not to buy the ones that matched our bedding. Instead, I prefer bright white pillows {it reminds me of a hotel}. I am, according to my husband, a pillow freak. I have to have a lot of pillows! In addition to the five decorative ones, I keep four king-sized pillows on our bed — two we sleep on, and two in front of those for added depth.

Do you notice that I reused some of the pillows from our former bedding? The three gray pillows matched perfect with the new bedding and were the perfect sizes. I added a couple extra patterned ones I found at Home Goods on the bed and one to the chair and ottoman I have in the corner of the room.

I found big, bold silver hardware with squared ends, and got a steal of a deal on both hardware and curtains at Kohl’s. Hanging curtains higher and wider than the window makes the window look even larger and doesn’t block any of the light.IMG_7123

I would love to have a chandelier in our room, but my husband insists on having a fan. He loves the added breeze, so alas, I lost out on that one. But I agree it’s nice to have in the warm summer months.

I found the glass bubble lamps at Gordman’s, another great place for home decor items.

We don’t have dressers in our bedroom, as we have built-in drawers in our closet. But we do have an armoire, which houses books and other non-essentials. On top of the armoire I have these sweet frames: baby photos of my husband and I {yep, we were both baldies, can you guess which one I am?}, our wedding invitation, a photo of our kiddos when they were 2 and 5, and a photo of our daughter when she was 3.

Beach in apothecary Finally, I’m a summer girl. Give me a beach vacation and I’m in heaven. My sweet friend Heather inspired me to put the sand from our vacation to the Dominican Republic in a cool glass jar. I found this apothecary jar at Michael’s, {used my 40% off coupon, of course}, poured the sand and goodies we found on the beach in it and voilá, instant beach. Every day when I make the bed, I get to look at my little happy place in a jar.

So there’s a little tour of our master bedroom. You’ll hear me say it over and over: The master bedroom is your refuge. What do you like best about yours?

Thanks, Kam! That means a lot! While making rice was not my forte many years ago, at least I can do other things well! 🙂
