Home Decor: Seeking the perfect piece

Paint colors

To me, decorating is like a game. Sometimes I get lucky when I’m searching for home décor items and I find exactly what I envisioned. Other times, I have an idea in my head and can’t find anything to take its place in reality. Such was the case when I was decorating my daughter’s room. If you missed that post, you can read about it here. I wanted a large monogram over her bed. Should be easy, I thought to myself. I searched multiple sites online. I perused multiple stores in person. Yet I couldn’t find “it.” So, with a little bit of creativity — and leftover wall paint — I made it happen.

I found a treasure trove of large monograms at the newest home décor store near my house, At Home. If you’ve never heard of this place or haven’t been, it is a large superstore (think Wal-Mart sized) solely for home décor. I spied multiple large monograms in the letter I needed, but they were all the wrong color. The metal M is cool, but would completely fade into her gray walls. I came upon letters with complementary or matching colors, but in the wrong letters. I found a turquoise metal letter, which would have been perfect, but it was the wrong letter and wrong size. {I contemplated changing my daughter’s name, but she didn’t like that idea. Tee hee}

Behind the scenes, this is the monogram I ended up buying. It was a pretty turquoise color, just not the right shade for my daughter’s room.

Since I always carry my paint swatches in my purse, I knew it was the wrong color when I bought it. However, I decided to make use of the leftover paint from her turquoise stripe in her accent wall and paint the monogram the exact color I wanted. You can see the paint color versus the original color here.

I also found a fun magnetic board at another store. It too wasn’t the perfect match, so we repainted that frame, as well.

This was the perfect painting project for my daughter, who gladly set up shop in my craft room and transformed the décor for her room!

The perfect letter M now adorns her wall. Decorating is like a game of hide and seek. Half the fun is finding — or creating — the right thing.
