Laundry blues: Cure for lost socks

My friend posted a picture of socks laying across her couch and a plea for help: “Un-partnered socks. I admit defeat. Who’s got a solution that does not involve safety pins?”

You know the drill: Socks go into the laundry as pairs, but when they come out of the dryer, their mate is nowhere to be found. Admittedly, this is a first-world laundry problem, but it resonates deeply with frustrated moms across the country. Several months ago, another friend of mine shared this photo of a pile of lost socks, questioning her frustrating relationship with lonely “sole” mates. So what’s the cure for lost socks?

Mismatched socks

My quick and easy solution is to use a mesh laundry bag. In each hamper or laundry basket you own, put a mesh laundry bag and throw all socks into the bag. If they go in as pairs, they’ll come out as pairs, making matches a lot easier. It does mean, however, that your kids — and you — need to put the socks in the bag.

Of course, most tweens I know prefer to wear mismatched socks anyway, so that might mess with the whole method. The good news is at least you know your dryer is not eating them!

In addition, if laundry as a whole is frustrating to you, check out my simple method for sorting laundry here. Not only is it a timesaver, it’s a great way for the family to quickly sort their own laundry. As a bonus, the laundry basket I use actually has two zip-out mesh bags as the dividers — perfect for socks!

Finally, if you still have lost socks, you might just want to make the best of it and turn it into a {cute} happy place!
